What Homeowners Should Know Before Installing a Gas Line

Adding a gas range, a fire pit, or a pool heater usually means adding gas pipe. This is one home project that should never be a DIY job.

Why People Add Gas Lines

Most gas line installation jobs start with a new appliance. Inside the house, that's often a range or cooktop, a dryer, a fireplace, or a water heater. Outside, it's the backyard. Folsom summers are long, and a lot of that time gets spent outdoors. Homeowners ask about a gas line for an outdoor kitchen, a built-in grill, or a pool or spa heater. Remodels are the other common reason. Move the kitchen to another wall and the gas has to move with it.

Sizing Comes Before Anything Else

Every gas appliance needs a certain amount of fuel, and that rating is listed on the appliance or in its manual. Before any pipe goes in, a plumber adds up the demand of what you already have plus what you're adding. Then comes distance. The farther the appliance sits from the meter, the larger the pipe may need to be. An undersized line starves the appliance, and other appliances on the system can suffer with it. Sometimes the existing piping can carry the extra load. Sometimes part of it has to be upsized. You want to know which before the countertops go in.

Permits, Testing, and Who Does the Work

Gas piping generally requires a permit and an inspection from your local building department. The new line is pressure tested before any appliance is connected, to prove it holds. If the line runs underground to a backyard feature, existing utilities get marked before anyone digs. A licensed gas line installer handles all of that as part of the job. Harris Plumbing is licensed and bonded (License #683805), and safe, code-compliant gas line work for homes and businesses is one of our main services.
